Chapter Nine

JAMES

Seeing Beth walk toward me in a simple mismatched bra and panties gets me harder than fuck. I’ve seen plenty of fancy lingerie—designer brands with lace and fancy straps and silk, in all colors and states of coverage. But Beth’s pink cotton panties and cream-colored t-shirt bra with the tiny bow at the center takes the prize. Maybe it’s just the body beneath, or maybe it’s Beth, completely unaware of how sexy she is.

Thankfully, I’m already in the water so she won’t see my cock tenting my trunks.

She steps into the tub and sucks in a hiss. “Hot,” she says.

“That’s kind of the point,” I say, and lean back. The sun has set, washing the peaks with an afterglow of pink, while stars pop out of the darkening sky one by one. I’ve visited plenty of pretty places, but nothing has ever beat this view.

“So how did you figure out that you wanted to develop anti-cancer drugs?” she asks, her cheeks and neckline pink from the heat.

The question surprises me. Most people assume I got into this field for the money. “My mom died of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma when I was eight.”

“Oh James,” she says, her eyes filling with concern. “I knew she passed away a long time ago, but not how.”

“Yeah. I don’t talk about it much,” I say and smile at a brief memory of my mom laughing a big, hearty laugh, probably at my expense, though I can’t remember the reason. I loved finding ways to make her laugh, to ease the tension in her face. In those moments, we both could forget about the bills stacking up and the pile of coupons she collected and our car with the bald tires that slipped in the snow.

“I’m so sorry,” Beth says, her eyes brimming with compassion. “What was your mom like?”

I smile. “She loved her garden, even though it’s so hard to grow anything at this altitude. She grew a lot of flowers, though. And she loved college football—a Boise State Broncos fan through and through.”

“You must miss her so much.”

“I think about her for sure.”

Beth gives me a soft smile. “I’ve never met your dad. He never came to meets or anything.”

I shrug. “He remarried quickly, and they started a family. It’s not that he forgot about me, I think I just reminded him of my mom too much.” I gaze up at the mountains. “So BioGen is for her. So I can help keep more families together.”

“Wow,” Beth says. “That’s…a lot, James. No wonder you’re so driven.”

My belly flips. The way she’s looking at me—like she’s seeing the real me and not the person I present to investors and politicians and girls who want a night of fun—is giving me dangerous ideas.

Beth seems to feel the shift too because she leans closer, her thigh pressing against mine. The heat between us explodes.

“James,” she whispers. “Kiss me.”

So I do, closing my eyes to savor her soft lips and the tender flick of her tongue. I could
